Uzumlu is the beautiful and relaxed little town just nineteen kilometres outside of Fethiye, there are approximately 600 – 700 English people living there in the area, in the summer months the number goes up to approximately 1000.

Uzumlu has managed to retain all the natural charm and character of a Turkish village, the town is situated in a valley of spectacular beauty in the middle of a hillside surrounded by think pine forests and mountain streams.

When you enter into the town, it seams like stepping back in time to village life.

This is an ideal location for somebody who wants to combine the enchantment of rural life with the nearby convenience of a modern town like Fethiye.

Uzumlu is famous for two things:

The local Uzumlu wine and Daster, which is a special kind of cloth woven from cotton or silk

Wine is made using the only natural ingredients and the red grape; this has a fruity, full bodied red wine, very much like a merlot. A village co-operative presents the wine produced from the grape of the area.

Daster is a cloth made from cotton spun on a spinning machine onto cotton reels to be used on the weaving machine and made into many different products, i.e. tablecloths, cotton sheets, shawls etc. etc.

Also, every Friday there is a local market in Uzumlu village for fruit, vegetables and clothes, etc.

The population of Uzumlu is 1765. The locals are adept at utilizing the land to make there living, the main trade 15 years ago was farming tobacco, but as the price of land and property has increased, the farming of tobacco has decreased to 5%. The tobacco was the easiest plant to farm as there was little water for much else to grow.

Produces include wine, grape juice, vinegar, olives, olive oil, tobacco, fig and fig products as well as weaving “Daster”.

Here you will discover the real turkey, enjoy the hospitality of the locals and experience the enchantment of rural life. Hear the nightingales singing, cowbells ringing and a donkey braying, while the tortoises amble along the road.
