The last car boot sale in aid of the 2010 Çalış Carnival will be held this Sunday 18 April 2010 in Calis, Fethiye.

It will be held in the car park behind Mado Ice Cream Parlour in its normal location.

This is the last event of the 2010 Carnival year so if you have any second hand gear to shift make sure you get to this one.

Stalls cost 10TL (a stall constitutes 2 tables width) and charities will not have to pay for their stall but are limited to one stall per charity.

You can bring your own tables or hire them. Hire costs are 2TL for a table and 1TL for a chair.

All stall fees will go towards the Çalış Carnival 2010 and Carnival charities.

Next car boot sale tomorrow – Sunday 18th April

The biggest street party in Fethiye – who would want to miss this? Every year the Calis Carnival party just gets better and better, with top performers, amazing floats and loads of partying people all taking to the streets in bursts of glittering colour. It’s Fethiye’s most famous street party, attracting immense crowds of people each year to the Fethiye area.

Entertainment includes the extravagantly colourful carnival parade, filled with feathered costumes and plenty of dancers, a craft exhibition, workshops, and the colourful extravaganza will culminate with a “Party in the Park” concert on the Sunday afternoon.

Carnival Weekend 2010 will take place on Saturday and Sunday 29/30 May and this year’s theme is “One World”.

There will also be a full programme of activities during the week leading up to Carnival Weekend as well as a fun packed calendar of fundraising social events throughout the year.

The biggest street party in Fethiye – who would want to miss this?

Visit a natural phenomena most tourists don’t even know about – Alexander Cavern and thermal springs.

Located off the D-400 road, signposted for saklikent. Drive 5.8km and look for the sign on your left that reads “Iskenderin Magrasi Alexander cavern Hohle”.

Nestled away off the road up a short lane and easily accessible by car or minibus, is Alexander cavern and thermal springs. At the top of the lane you will come to a Tea Garden, take a moment to relax and have a refreshing beverage before being guided by my Fevzi to marvel below ground into the cavern where you will be guided by oil lamp through narrow passageways. Take a breath and be bewitched by the rock formations that formed thousands of years ago.

After exiting the caverns you will be guided through the shrubs and wooded area, to the thermal bathing where large baths are filled with thermal water, where you and you family can bathe. Or stay overnight in a traditional Turkish pansiyon, room sleeps 2-3 people at a cost of approx 30TL including breakfast.

Fethiye’s Forgotten Gems – Alexander Cavern

His unique style and repertoire’s been much loved within Turkey and he is now looking towards expanding into touring venues in Europe, the UK and Northern Island.

The next Calis Carnival Car Boot Sale is on Sunday 27 September 2009 to kickstart the fundraising for 2010 Calis Carnival.

It is to be held in the same place – Car Park to the rear of Mado Ice Cream Parlour which is on Calis Seafront.

Sellers 8:00am Buyers 9:00am

Stalls are 10TL (2 Tables). Bring your own tables or hire them for 2TL each. All stall fees will go towards the Calis Carnival 2010 and Carnival charities.

Get There Early
The allocation of stalls are on a first come first set up basis and stallholders should get there before 8.00 am to secure a place.

As it is still the man holiday season the promenade cannot be used for the sale.

However, the side road between the car park and the Lighthouse Restaurant has been allocated for additional stalls.

New goods stalls, trade stalls and hot food stalls will not be permitted but craft stalls, hand made goods and second hand goods are fine.

Important – Future Dates
As from October, as requested by the Fethiye Belediye, the Car Boot Sales will be held on the second from last Sunday of every month if the weather permits. The dates will be as follows;

The Turkish bath or hamam as it is known has been around for thousands of years, it is thought that it first came when the rulers of turkey was the Romans. The Seljuk’s and Ottomans built large Turkish baths in some of the most populated areas of Turkey for the Turkish people to use, this was because the Turkish people did not have baths in there homes so they would go to the local bath.

A visit to the Turkish baths these days is a day out for the Turkish who often take a picnic with them to eat after bathing, the Turkish baths is an enjoyable luxury which is used as a method of cleansing the body and used for the relaxation of the body, which most people visit the baths at least once in there lifetime.

For the Turkish people it was more than just a place to cleanse the skin, it became a way of life, a place where everyone came no matter who you was, where you lived or whether you was man, woman or child, of course women had separate times in the baths to men. The Turkish bath was a familiar place to go during the earliest year’s right up to the present day. The Turkish mark special occasions during ones times life in which they celebrate a newborns fortieth day and a brides bathing before marriage with food and live music, and the avowal of a promise, a contingent on the fulfilment of some important wish, for which is was a custom in Anatolia.

It was not a place where believers could fulfil the Islamic perception of cleanliness. It was a place in which to mingle, socialize and gossip. Women would proceed from their harem to the hamam with great ceremony, accompanied by servants heavily-laden with delicacies to tide the ladies over the hours they would spend lounging in the steam. The young women used this opportunity to show off their ornately embroidered towels and ivory inlaid slippers, not to mention their youthful figures, while older women would spot potential wives for their sons. Men would discuss the latest court scandal or talk business and politics.

When you leave the Turkish baths you will feel as if you have been to heaven, an invigorating Turkish Delightful Experience. If you want to keep your suntan longer then have a Turkish bath when you arrive in Fethiye to prepare your skin for a deep suntan, or half way through to stop you peeling for when you get home for a longer lasting suntan.

The process of the Turkish bath in Turkey

When you enter you will be given a cubicle in which you take off your clothes and wear the loin cloth provided by the staff. You should never take off this cloth and go naked in the Turkish bath as this is considered rude, although it’s quite acceptable to wash your private parts from underneath the loin cloth. After changing you will be taken to the hot room of the Turkish bath in which you just relax and work up a sweat while your muscles loosen up. If you want, there will be a member of staff in the Turkish bath who will give you a Turkish massage. After the hot room you go to the warm room of the Turkish bath where you can either wash yourself or a staff member will scrub you down using Turkish soap and a special cloth that gets out all your old skin blocking your pores. Once this has finished you are taken to the cool room and given lots of towels to wrap yourself in. Here you can just relax and order some tea or any other drink that’s available. If you’re feeling tired you can even go back to your cubicle for a nap.

The Old Turkish Bath in Fethiye, together with the Mosque situated nearby, were built by Yavuz Sultan Selim in the 16th Century.

Come to this fine example of Ottoman architecture and enjoy an original Turkish bath coupled with traditional Turkish hospitality.

The Turkish Baths (Hamam)

I expect many of you will have walked or driven past a splash of blue color on an uncultivated bit of ground or growing on a fence. Probably without taking much notice of it. Gardeners among you may have wondered what it is. There is nothing that grows like it in the UK, apart from bindweed.

The plant in question is a perennial morning glory. It is called oceanblue morning-glory, blue morning-glory, and also blue dawn flower.
The latin name is Ipomaea indica. It is native to Hawaii and the New World tropics, but has been introduced into many countries.

Ipomoea belongs to the plant family Convolvulaceae, which has over 600 species ranging from annuals, herbs, climbers, shrubs and trees. It includes the familiar bindweed. The plants grow in tropical and warm temperate regions, predominantly in the Americas. Ipomoea indica is found throughout the tropics, scrambling over trees, shrubs and walls, and in fact anything it can climb up. In some countries it has become an invasive, problem weed because of its rampant growth. Here in Turkey it is kept in check somewhat by the dry summers.

The large trumpet-shaped flowers open in the morning sun and start off a beautiful irridescent, ocean blue colour. As the day passes the flowers take on pinkish hues and the colour changes to a shade of blue violet.

Each flower only lasts a day. By night the flowers have folded in on themselves, ready to be replaced by fresh blooms the next day.

You can grow it on a fence or wall here, if you like, and admire the attractive sky blue flowers produced all summer long. But the long trailing shoots need frequent cutting back to prevent it spreading and rooting where it is not wanted. Do not plant it if close to other plants, or if you cannot give it much room. Give it a good watering once every one or two weeks and it will be happy. Water it too often and too much and it will grow even faster and at the expense of the flowers. In winter it dies back somewhat and needs tidying up, cutting back the growth to the main stems.

Ipomaea indica rarely produces seeds. It spreads vegetatively when the long running shoots root down into the ground and produce new plants the following year. The top growth is killed by a sharp frost, but because of the vigour of the plant, it will soon grow back the next year.
